DCC HOSTING BASKETBALL OFFICIATING CAMP
The Dawson Basketball Officiating Camp will be held on the campus of Dawson Community College June 13-14, 2025. The basketball officiating camp is for current youth league, high school, and college officials and for those looking to get started in officiating high school and college basketball games across Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, and Wyoming.
The camp has been approved by the Montana Officials Association (MOA) as well as the North Dakota High School Athletic Association (NDHSAA). Educators can also receive renewal units for it as well.
The Dawson Basketball Officiating Camp combines both practical experience and hands-on instruction with classroom learning. Participants will officiate high school games and receive valuable evaluation from certified referees in addition to excellent education on officiating topics during daily classroom educational sessions. This year, officials will also get lots of end of game experience in the Cardiac Tournament on Friday night.
Dawson Athletic Director Joe Peterson commented, "This has really been a great camp for officials throughout Montana and North Dakota and it keeps getting better every year. We are excited that it is now certified by both states. It is fun to watch the more experienced officials working on their craft as well as the new ones who are just testing it out and learning to get comfortable."
Instructors include Jeff Risk who was a basketball referee for 42 years and worked at the high school level, college level and professional level. He currently serves as the Mon-Dak Conference Commissioner and Supervisor of officials, as well as Supervisor for the North Star Conference and the NDSHAA State Tournaments. Matt Shute is the current coordinator of officials for the Frontier Conference. Previously he worked 15 years at the NCAA Division I and II levels as well as the NAIA, NJCAA and high school. He worked 12 Frontier Conference championships, 6 NAIA National Championship games and 11 high school state tournaments. Perry Olson has officiated high school for 20 years and college for 15 years. He's worked the NAIA National Tournament and the NJCAA Division 1 National Tournament. He currently serves on the North Dakota Officials Association Board of Directors. Jeff Kent has worked high school basketball in Montana for 24 years, including 17 state tournaments. He has officiated NJCAA for 13 years and the past 9 years in the Northstar and Frontier Conference of the NAIA. He was the president of the Eastern Montana Official's Pool for a decade.
