Dawson Beats Central Wyoming in Bounce for the Brave Game
It was a festive day at Dawson Community College as they welcomed 700 school kids and took time to honor local veterans in their Bounce for the Brave Game. The Bucs sent the kids and the vets home with smiles on their faces as they provided an entertaining game and a 34 point victory, 88-54, over the visiting Central Wyoming College Rustlers.
Dawson took an early lead on lay-ups by Justin Asi and Seth Amunrud, followed by a steal and a dunk by Jordan Jasper. The Rustlers came back to tie it up on a 3-pointer from leading scorer Jordan Peal, but that was his only field goal of the game. Dawson led the entire way, outscoring Central Wyoming 15-2 over the next five minutes. It was a battle of different playing styles as CWC tried to slow it down and run the clock while DCC tried to play with pace and speed it up. Dawson only took three three-pointers in the first half, and didn't make any of them. But from inside the arc, the Bucs shot 60%. They also forced 11 turnovers and outrebounded the visitors 22-12. In the final three minutes of the half, Dawson finished on a 15-6 run to take a 40-25 advantage into the locker room. Nobody from either team
reached double digits in the opening twenty minutes.
Similar to Sunday's game, Dawson jumped out of the gates quickly in the second half, outscoring CWC 20-2 with a balanced attack that had everyone getting involved. Posting a 60-27 lead at the 13 minute mark, Dawson kept the advantage between 30-40 points the rest of the way. They also gave the kids a lot to cheer for with a monstrous dunk from Brandon Hymes and a 3-point barrage from Amunrud. Central Wyoming made two three-pointers in the final forty-three seconds to make the final score 88- 54. It was the first time this year that the Bucs were held under 100 points. Dawson forced 24 turnovers in the game and scored 29 points off those turnovers. The Bucs outrebounded them 41-28 and shot 54% from the field.
"Central Wyoming is a tough team defensively and their style is hard to play against," shared Dawson Coach Joe Peterson. "It was a good test for us and I think we learned a lot through some of our struggles early on. But the real winner today was the kids who had a great day at DCC and the veterans who were honored for their service. Because of their service, we are able to live in a free country, pursue an education and play basketball."
Seth Amunrud finished with 19 points, 5 rebounds, 4 assists and 7 steals. He was 7-9 from the field and 3-4 from 3-point range. Jordan Jasper scored 15 points to go along with 5 assists. Justin Asi and Brandon Hymes also contributed 10 points each. Asi grabbed 7 rebounds. Hunter Trego was the only Rustler in double figures with 12 points.
Dawson is now 5-0 on the season and will head to Gillette this weekend to play Four Winds and Gillette
College.
