
Dawson Bucs Sweep Another Road Trip
The Buccaneers kept on rolling through the Mon-Dak Conference with another convincing road win on Monday night in Devils Lake, ND. Dawson beat the Lake Region State College Royals 100-88. It was the 15th time in 25 games, they've eclipsed the century mark.
"I thought we showed good composure tonight and really shared the ball well," commented Dawson Coach Joe Peterson. "Lake Region played very hard and really got after us defensively, but Seth and Justin got us going and kept us ahead, and then the bench really came alive in the second half. We played with a lot of passion tonight and that made it a lot of fun."
The first half was hotly contested. Dawson jumped on them early with a 12-2 spurt to open the game, but the Royals came right back with a 14-3 run to take the lead. There were four ties and thirteen lead changes in the first twenty minutes. Alvin Payne was leading the way for the hosts with 13 points by getting into the paint at will. Josh Miller also made three big 3-pointers. For the Bucs, Seth Amunrud was close to unstoppable, scoring 17 points on 7-10 shooting. Justin Asi contributed 10 points. Amunrud's last basket gave Dawson a 46-43 lead going into the break.
Asi and Amunrud led the charge to begin the second half again, getting Dawson off to a great start and building a double digit lead just minutes into the final frame. The bench came in and added to the lead by going long range, Matt Kinzeler and Troy Hugs dialed in a couple of threes each. Tytan Hanson and Ade Onaleye also made 3-pointers during a 17-2 run. The Bucs were up 97-74 before Lake Region closed the game on another 14-3 run to make the final result more respectable.
Dawson finished with 29 assists on 38 field goals. They held the Royals to 40% shooting from the field and outrebounded them 50–42.
Amunrud posted a team high 25 points on 11-14 shooting to go along with 7 rebounds, 6 assists and 4 steals. Asi had 20 points. Sam Massaquoi contributed 14 points, 6 rebounds and 5 assists. Ade Onaleye also reached double figures with 12 points. Alvin Payne led Lake Region with 29 points.
The win was Dawson's 10th in a row and puts them at 9-0 in the conference with 5 games left. Dawson will host Bismarck State College on Sunday afternoon at 4:00 pm. DCC Athletics, in conjunction with the DCC Indigenous Culture Club, is raising awareness for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women (MMIW) on Sunday and is inviting everyone in attendance to wear red.
