Lady Bucs Have Strong Showing at Tip-Off Tournament

The Dawson Community College Lady Bucs finished the Mon-Dak Tip-Off Tournament 2-1 falling short in the championship game. The Lady Bucs defeated Lake Region State College 61-54 and Bismarck State 68-62 on their way to the championship game where they fell to Williston State 76-67.

The Lady Bucs jumped out early to a 23-5 score, led by three 3-pointers by Zoe Skeens, at the end of the first quarter vs LRSC. The Royals battled back, even had a one-point lead late in the fourth quarter. Key defensive stops by the Lady Bucs, including taking three charges, two by Evelyn Old Coyote and one by Denica Delaney sealed the game for DCC. The Lady Bucs were led in scoring by Kylee Old Elk and Evelyn Old Coyote who scored 17 and 15 points, respectively, while Kamariah Hawkins chipped in 9 points and 11 rebounds.

The Lady Bucs started slow against Bismarck State, falling behind by 12 points early. DCC went to their full court pressure defense, which forced 33 turnovers and fueled a 7-point halftime lead. Evelyn Old Coyote and Kylee Old Elk sealed the game with clutch free throw shooting down the stretch. The Lady Bucs were led by Old Coyote and Old Elk who scored 18 and 15 while Eirini Chatzinikoli chipped in with 11 points.

In the championship game against Williston State it was a back and forth game from the jump ball to the final buzzer. The teams changed leads minute by minute until with 1:46 left in the game the Lady Bucs failed to score and were forced to foul. The game was much closer than the score indicates as Williston converted all their free throw opportunities late. Kylee Old Elk exploded for 33 points in the losing effort for the Lady Bucks.

Coach Weber said about the tournament," I think we put the Mon-Dak conference on notice that we are a team to be reckoned with. We played extremely hard, yet we have a lot of room for improvement. I am very excited about our team, and what we can accomplish moving forward."
