Colorado Sisters Commit to Dual Sports at Dawson CC

Not one, but two sisters hailing from Westminster, Colorado have decided to take their talents to Glendive, Montana.  Hannah and Aaliyah Chavez, who played for Mountain Range High School, have officially signed their NJCAA National Letter of Intents to play for Dawson Community College Women’s Basketball and Track and Field.

Hannah is a 5’11 forward who will be transferring from Northeastern Community College and will be assigned for both an inside and outside presence.  DCC Basketball Coach Romeo Lagmay, Jr. said, “Hannah is going to cause defensive issues for our opponents.  She is strong underneath and can muscle her way to the basket.  On the perimeter, she shoots the 3 ball well.  So it’s kind of like pick your poison.  She can defend the post well with her strength, not allowing her opponents to establish position.  I like that she’s in tune to get the job done and is working out hard this summer at it.”

In high school, as a senior captain, Hannah averaged 12 points, 8 rebounds, 3 assists and 3.5 steals.  Her freshman and sophomore year, she was voted Honorable Mention All-Conference.  During her junior and senior seasons, she was voted First Team All-Conference.  Hannah broke the school’s rebounding record with 575 total rebounds.

Hannah stated, “I chose Dawson CC to be my home for the next year because of the community and given the chance to represent the Women’s Basketball and Track & Field Teams.”

5’7 sister Aaliyah will bring a different presence in the point guard position.  Aaliyah will be an incoming freshman, whereas her sister will be a sophomore.  She also was a two year captain, being voted Honorable Mention All-Conference.  Academically, Aaliyah has been on the honor roll and voted Academic All-State as well.

Aaliyah averaged 8 points, 2.5 assists, 6 rebounds, 3.5 steals and 1.2 blocks in her senior campaign.  In different games, her career highs include 22 points, 20 rebounds, 7 assists, 7 steals and she shot over 50% in 3 point shooting in 4 games.  She was voted Top 5 combo guard in 5A Colorado Prep, All-Colorado Region Top Defensive Player, All 5A Colorado Front Range, MaxPreps Player of the Game 8 times, and participated in the Prep Girls Hoops 2022 Combo Guard Showcase.

In track and field, both Chavez sisters will participate in the discus and shot put events.  Aaliyah was this past season’s first place district champion in the discus.

Coach Lagmay commented, “Having both sisters full of enthusiasm to play with one another at the college level is a major plus for us.  They’re so excited, and I think that is pure motivation for them to do well here.  Both can attack in a variety of ways, where both have experience playing all five positions.  Aaliyah is someone who is crafty with the ball and has an eye to make plays.  I’m excited for them to contribute to the on-going success of our program and the direction it’s leading into.”

Aaliyah expressed her excitement, “The reason I chose to play basketball and also do track and field here at Dawson was because of Jesus alone.  My family and I had been praying for a blessing to come along and little did we know we were going to meet Coach Romeo Lagmay.  I am truly thankful to God for blessing us with the wisdom to talk to Coach Romeo, who was able to talk to Coach Chase about me also doing track here, but that’s not the best part! Not only was I able to come and continue my academic and athletic careers here, I also got the blessing to do it with my older sister Hannah.  So as you can tell, I got the whole package. Super excited to come down and become a part of this big family. Thank you so much Coach Romeo and Coach Chase for this big opportunity. LET’S GO BUCS!!!!”
