Lady Hoops Sign Another from New Zealand

Dawson Community College head women’s basketball Coach Romeo Lagmay, Jr. is pleased to announce the signing of Samantha Jenkins of Queen Margaret College located in Wellington, New Zealand. The Nelson native officially signed her NJCAA National Letter of Intent to start this Fall 2021 at DCC.

The 5’10” guard is known for her remarkable long range shooting. Coach Lagmay said, “Signing Sam is huge for us. Her height and ability to shoot way beyond the arc is outstanding. Aside from her outside shooting, she does very well playing the point guard spot, handling the ball against defensive pressure with ease. Her personality is infectiously friendly, and she is going to fit in nicely to our program and community. I think she’s going to do some big things as a Lady Buccaneer!”

While at Queen Margaret, their team placed 3^rd out of 8 teams in their local competition in 2020. They would later participate in the 8 game national tournament, competing against 24 teams. Samantha was ranked 8^th in the tournament in scoring with an average of 15 points and 6.5 rebounds. She averaged an amazing 71% from the 3-point line, which was the second highest percentage in the tournament. Her team finished 6^th in the tournament. In 2019, Queen Margaret finished in 5^th place in the national tournament.

Her basketball experience also includes being a member of the Capital Swish Wellington 18n18 team, competing in the national women’s tournament and placing 4^th in 2020. As a player for the Wellington U19 in 2019, her team finished 6^th out of 10 teams in the U19 National Tournament.

In 2020, Samantha was given the Representative Badge Award in high school. It is an honor awarded to an individual who represents a sport well on a regional level. She also received a volunteer services award.

Sam was excited about her signing, “I love that not only will I be able to further my education at Dawson, with their high academic success rate, but also follow my dream of playing basketball in America. It’s so incredible that I am able to fully immerse myself into a new culture while doing what I love, playing basketball! Dawson opened up an opportunity for me to continue gaining experience and skill. I cannot wait for what Dawson holds for my future!”
