DCC Women’s Basketball Comes to an End

In the opening round of the Region 13 tournament, #5 seed Dawson Community College Women’s Basketball had no chance from the moment the first quarter started.  The Lady Bucs were outscored 29-14 by #4 seed Lake Region State College.  Dawson would go into halftime down 12, but the Lady Royals still poured it on in the third.  Dawson (15-17, 7-7) lost to Lake Region (19-13, 8-6) 84-65.

Despite 31 points from Ashley Orozco, and 17 points from Ashya Klopfenstein, the rest of the Lady Buccaneers were nowhere to be found.  Orozco also had 7 steals and 3 rebounds.  Klopfenstein had 7 rebounds and 2 blocks.  Tamiya Francis was able to sink in two three-point shots during a 24 point deficit run to pull within 10, but not enough to get any closer.  Francis added 5 rebounds and 4 assists.

Lake Region outscored Dawson’s bench 25-4.  The second chance points edge went to Lake Region 17-10.  The Lady Royals shot well from the perimeter scoring 42% from the field, 39% from three, and 89% from the foul line.  Dawson shot a sub-par 35% from the field, 72% from the foul line, and a poor 19% from the three point line shooting 4-21.

“As much as we appreciated our Lady Bucs competing, all season it has been inconsistent.  We beat really good teams and lost to really bad teams.  At least 8 of our players have been known to score on several occasions in high double figures, but we just couldn’t put it all together in one game.  Hopefully our returning freshmen now have a good understanding of what they need to work on to be consistent as sophomores,” said Head Coach Romeo Lagmay, Jr.

Dawson loses two sophomores and 1 freshmen.  Arena Plenty will move on to continue her academic career.  Kitawna Little Light and Ervianne Cly have signed to continue their academic and basketball careers at SAGU American Indian College in Phoenix, AZ.
