Women’s Basketball Win in Second Round

After losing in the opening round of the Pre-Season Mon-Dak Tournament, the Lady Buccaneers bounced back with a statement and rocked the Lady Lumberjacks of Dakota College at Bottineau in the second round 82-55.

Backcourt guard play of Tamiya Francis and Ashley Orozco made sure their presence was known by being more careful and disciplined by not fouling out and taking control of the ball game.  Francis scored a game high 23 points, along with 9 rebounds, 2 assists and 3 steals.  Orozco continued her double digit scoring by adding 11 points, 8 rebounds, 2 steals and a game high 7 assists.

Dawson’s half-court zone play made it difficult for the Lady Jacks to execute their offense, as they shot 12 percent, going 4-33 from the 3 point line.  The Lady Bucs also forced 21 turnovers, converting them into 24 points.  Dawson had a huge impact in the paint scoring 48 points inside.  Dakota would shortly scare the Lady Bucs winning the second quarter 21-19 going into halftime with some momentum.

The Lady Bucs would keep their composure getting 27 points off the bench.  Haley Olson added 18 points, 5 rebounds, 2 assists and 2 steals coming off the bench.  Mar Marata Crespo had a double double of 10 points and 11 rebounds, along with 3 assists and 2 blocks.

Head coach Romeo Lagmay, Jr. was pleased with the outcome, “It was good to see some quick maturity by our freshmen losing in our first official game and coming back the very next day and blasting their next opponent.  It shows our players are very competitive, and will prove that they are a force to be reckon with.”

Dawson will play in their final round of the tournament on November 3rd at 9:00 am cst against United Tribes Technical College.
