Lady Buccaneers Start off Guns Blazing with Conference Opener Win

In the Mon-Dak Conference season opener, Dawson Community College Women’s Basketball stormed the court hard, attacking from every angle: lay ups, 3-pointers, full court pressure, fast break offense, diving on loose balls and taking charges.  The Lady Buccaneers appeared to be very confident from the start against United Tribes Technical College.  Every quarter was won by the Bucs, except the 4th quarter.  Dawson would go into halftime with the lead 54-34.  They only turned it over 4 times in the opening half. Dawson defeated United Tribes with a score 99-73.

The Lady Bucs would continue the second half with their strong full court zone press and capitalize on 29 turnovers committed by the Lady Thunderbirds of UTTC.  Dawson had 17 steals on the night.  DCC would also outrebound UTTC 57-54, along with solid shooting percentages: 42% from the field, 35% from beyond the arc, and 71% from the charity stripe.

Last year’s Mon-Dak Conference MVP Alexius Foster showed why she is one of the toughest players in the league again this year.  She had a game high 34 points, shooting 100% from the foul line (4-4).  Freshman forward Sarah Miranda had a super performance of her own with 23 points and 8 rebounds.  One of the top players in steals in the conference, sophomore Ejanae Coopwood, did it again with a game high 5 steals, 5 rebounds and 14 points.  Kitawna Little Light and Tasia Moore had the same stat line of 10 points, 6 rebounds, 2 assists and 2 steals.  Chynna Torrence only scored 2 points, but had a team high 11 rebounds.

Head Coach Romeo Lagmay, Jr. was very pleased with the team’s first win, “Tonight was a total team effort.  When the team is on the same page, and you see it and feel it, most of the time victory prevails, and it is satisfying regardless the outcome; the game is joyful.  They left everything on the court, and let the chips fall where they fall.  Well we had lots of chips on our end, and I am extremely proud of the team’s performance and a well prepared scouting report by our assistant coach Paige Wright.”

The Lady Bucs will face off with Lake Region State College on Sunday in Devils Lake, North Dakota.
