DCC Women with Another Upset Win to Reach Semifinal Round

The Lady Buccaneers of Dawson Community College are on quite a roll.  In the opening round of the Region XIII Tournament, DCC Women’s Basketball defeated the Lady Royals of Lake Region State College 75-69.  This was their fourth time facing one another, and Lake Region won all three contests previously.  All of the previous games went down to the wire, but this time around Dawson would keep their composure and fight back from a 15 point deficit at the end of the first quarter.  Both teams were sitting at 7-7 in conference play, tied for fourth place.

After a hot start from #4 seed Lake Region, the fifth seeded Lady Bucs resurfaced and outscored their opponent 27-18 in the second quarter to go into the half down by six, 40-34.  Dawson would keep their spark going to start the second half with an immediate inbound steal by Ejanae Coopwood at halfcourt, and winning the third quarter 24-11.  The Lady Royals would make a short run and come within striking distance, but the scoring hand of Alexius Foster and kleptomania hands of Coopwood was too much for Lake Region.  Foster scored a game high 29 points along with 3 rebounds, 4 steals and she was perfect from the field, making all nine of her attempts.  Coopwood had 15 points, 5 rebounds and a game high 8 steals.  Kitawna Little Light came off the bench to pump in 12 points of her own.  Chynna Torrence contributed 7 points.

Dawson caused 28 turnovers and had 16 steals.  The Lady Bucs were able to convert 34 points from turnovers.  Dawson’s bench also outscored Lake Region 21-13; however, Lake Region outrebounded the Lady Bucs 41-32 and had more points in the paint, 34-26.

DCC will play in the semifinal round against #1 seed and undefeated Miles Community College on Saturday, March 2nd at 2:00 pm.  The semifinal winner will play in the championship game on Sunday, March 2rd at 3:00 pm.
