Women’s Basketball Adds Two from Colorado

Head Coach Romeo Lagmay, Jr. was able to sign a couple of athletes from Colorado to NJCAA National Letter of Intents.  Coach Lagmay added high school teammates, and cousins, Centoria and Brittany Roberts to the 2018-2019 Dawson Community College Women’s Basketball roster.

The family affair duo hail from Denver South High School in Denver, Colorado.  5’7 Centoria and 5’6 Brittany played both guard and forward positions for head coach Wayne McDonald where they had a 14-11 overall record, placing second in the conference at 6-2 in the 5A Class of the Denver Public Schools.  The team made it to the second round of the playoffs for the first time in school history.  Coach McDonald had this to say about both of his players, “Brittany played both the guard and forward positions, and helped the team tremendously in those roles.  At times she would start, at times she would give a needed spark as a 6th man.  She was very flexible in fulfilling whatever the team needed at any time.  She was the catalyst for some must needed wins we had during the season.  Centoria was a key element in our successful season. She was our leading scorer and was a big weapon.  She played both guard and forward.  Her consistent scoring was important for us to win.  Whenever Centoria had a great game, we won by big margins.  She was a team leader and handled the ball well.  She was a varsity letter winner for 4 years and was team captain.”

Centoria averaged 14 ppg, 8 rpg, 2 spg and made 2nd Team All-Conference.  She was invited to the Colorado High School Coaches Association All-State game.  Centoria was also named Gold Honor Roll student-athlete.  Brittany averaged 6 ppg, 5.5 rpg and 2.5 spg, and made Honorable Mention All-Conference.

Centoria and Brittany also played for AAU travel squad Colorado Prospect Academy under head coach James Rogers.  Coach Rogers was very excited about their commitment to Dawson, “Centoria is very athletic, a hard worker and good student who is an all-around good kid.  She will be ready to play right away.  Brittany is very athletic as well.  She works very hard, and plays good defense.  She will be a good team player, who is very coachable working and playing hard.”

Coach Lagmay on the duo, “Once again, I believe we were very fortunate to land two solid ball players in Brittany and Centoria.  They play in a very tough conference in Denver, and they will fit in quite well with the system we run where we trap and fast break a lot, which requires lots of stamina and athleticism.  Both of them have that.  So the transition should be a smooth one for them.”

The cousins have had obstacles in the past, but believe they are ready to go.  Centoria explained how she felt out of place in her position in her early high school career, having to deal with different coaches at the helm.  It was not until her junior year she realized she could play at the next level, “I was pushed to be not only a rebounder, but a scorer as well.  I talked to several colleges and they just didn’t seem like a right fit, but once Coach Romeo of Dawson came along and I checked out the videos and spoke with him on the phone, it was then I knew that was the right place for me!  I will be granted the skill set and obtain a great education.   I’m excited to call this place home, build relationships along the way and ready to put in work during the season.  Thank you to everyone who had faith in me and thank you Coach Romeo for giving me this opportunity!

Brittany also had plans to receive a college scholarship while playing in high school.  Unfortunately, those goals seemed dim when she got injured at the end of her sophomore year.  Not being able to practice or play in the summer and being cautious her junior year, limited her vision and quest to work out really hard.  Going into her senior year, she mentally decided to ignore being re-injured, and knowing she was fully healed, she went all out to try and become productive and be recruited by college coaches.  Brittany went on to further explain, “I didn’t have the best year, but I had a decent one.  Thanks to Coach Romeo Lagmay, I was able to achieve my goal.  I chose Dawson to continue my basketball career because I was informed of what great opportunities I could have attending, and how well of a family the team is.  I cannot wait to meet my new sisters and win some games!  I would also like to thank the CPA staff for getting my name out, as well as the coaching staff at Denver South.  Most importantly, I’d like to thank my family for believing in me, and now I can conclude this year with a ‘We Did It!’”
