Lady Bucs Win First Round Playoff

Lady Bucs Win First Round Playoff

Dawson Community College Women’s Basketball was hoping for a coin toss decision to receive a fourth seeding in the Region XIII Tournament.  They got it, and they capitalized on it.  Hosting Williston State College in the first round playoff game at the DCC Toepke Center, the Lady Bucs came out on fire defeating the Lady Tetons 85-61.  There were signs of high energy right out of the gates.  The Lady Bucs won every quarter and showed why playing intense defense pays off.

DCC forced 32 turnovers and had 19 steals.  They were relentless on defense, trapping every Lady Teton on the baseline and sideline.  The Lady Bucs scored 32 points off of those turnovers.  Dawson led by as many as 28 points, but Head Coach Romeo Lagmay, Jr. likes to clear his bench when the score is lopsided.  All eleven Lady Bucs seen action on the court.

MacKinzie Verke and Alexius Foster scored a game high 16 points apiece.  Verke also had 3 steals.  Lexia Bell-White had 14 points, along with 5 rebounds and 6 steals.  Ejanae Coopwood scored 12 points, grabbed 4 rebounds and 3 steals.  Sara Anderson contributed with 9 points, 6 rebounds, 5 assists and 3 steals.  Chasity Pope had a solid 8 points and 7 rebounds.  Emily Harwood chipped in with 7 points, 8 rebounds, 4 assists and 2 steals.

Coach Lagmay on the win, “It was good to see us win at home redeeming ourselves from last week’s performance on sophomore night.  This is how a team is supposed to bounce back.  I told them to play with an ‘attitude’ tonight.  Strike first. Strike hard.  No mercy.  We don’t want them to breathe.  And that, they did.  A job well done.  We wanted this seeding route, and I believe we are ready for the semi-final action this weekend.”

Dawson will face off against #1 conference seed North Dakota State College of Science who is undefeated in conference and ranked #16 nationally in the NJCAA.  The game is Saturday, March 3rd at 12:00 pm CST.  The winner of that game will play the winner of Lake Region State and Bismarck State for the championship on Sunday at 2:00 pm.
