Dawson Splits on the Road

Apr 5, 2024

With a tough start in game one, Dawson softball lost to Miles 12-4. Riley Price, Ashley Hammers, and Shelby Blankenship all threw for the Lady Bucs, but the Pioneers just had a great first game at the plate. With six home runs, the Bucs fell behind, making it hard for them to work out of the hole.

Faith McDonald hit a solo home run shot in the top of the fourth which helped gain the momentum back. Unfortunately, the Lady Bucs weren't able to catch up or build off the momentum.

In game two, DCC came out much stronger, winning the 11 inning ball game 14-10. With the four hour game, Brooke Lijewski had a great game at the plate hitting the grand slam to propel the Bucs ahead by four at the end. Lijewski drove in a total of six runs on five hits this game.

DCC collected 22 hits in the game and MCC garnered eight. Dawson CC took the lead, 7-6, in the top of the fourth thanks to singles by Lijewski, Jillian Johnson, and Ashley Hammers. With a two-run homer, MCC tied up the game in the bottom of the seventh. With a single by Madi Duke, an RBI was scored, making it 10-9 for the Bucs. With another home run by Miles, the game was tied 10-10 in the bottom of the eighth. This was when Lijewski came up and hit her grand slam to push the Lady Bucs ahead by four runs.

Nekysa Wright, Faith McDonald, Samantha Maerz, Hammers, Johnson, Shelby Blankenship, and Duke all collected multiple hits for Dawson. Maerz came away with two walks adding to the overall total of six DCC walks in the game.

Head softball coach Casey-May Huff had this to say about the day. "Miles came out swinging! It didn't matter who or what we threw, they had our number; however, I am very proud of how the girls responded to that second game! We could've folded and left with two losses, but we came into the second game with a chip on our shoulders and fought till the very end. Price and Hammers threw very well and Brooke really had a great day at the plate."

Dawson welcomes Bismarck State College at home on Saturday April, 6th at 1:00PM and 3:00PM. They will then head to Bismarck Sunday for another double header vs BSC.
