Dawson Community College President Scott Mickelsen announced that the college will be starting a Cross-Country program in the Fall of 2018. DCC already competes in 6 intercollegiate sports including men’s and women’s basketball, volleyball, baseball, softball and rodeo.
The Head Coach position posted internally this past week and will be posted externally next week. A new coach will be hired soon in hopes of recruiting a team to begin practice and competition in August. DCC envisions the coach will recruit 7-10 men and 7-10 women to participate each year. They will compete in Region XIII of the National Junior College Athletic Association. Most of their meets will be with four year colleges around Montana and North Dakota. They will begin practice in August and participate in 4-5 meets in September and October. The athletes will also participate in long distance races for track in the Spring semester.
DCC Athletic Director Joe Peterson commented, “There are good high school programs in our community and around the state where we can draw quality student-athletes from. If we can hire a good coach, then I’m sure we can have a high quality program capable of achieving the success we have had in our other 6 sports.”

Dr. Mickelsen explained why Dawson is starting a new athletic program, “As the recruiters traveled across Montana, one of the most frequent questions students were asking was, "Does DCC have a cross country team? Due to the heightened awareness we are taking action to make sure the needs of this group of student athletes are met.”
